Can you mine with a CPU and a GPU?

I want to get into bitcoin mining myself but i've been doing some reading and it seems like you need special hardware to mine the bitcoin for you. My question is can you mine bitcoin with a powerful CPU and a powerful GPU?, For people who want to know the specs of my PC here they are. If you can help me out let me know, thank you for your time.

Internet connection only works for some programs

I've got a kind of confusing problem: I just set up my desktop at a new apartment, and I can connect to the internet just fine. However, some programs are having trouble using that connection. For example, I'm posting this using Chrome, and Spotify, Steam, and Skype work just fine. However, when I try to play Dota 2, or rest run a bitcoin miner, they can't make use of the internet connection.
To complicate things, when I connect from a laptop to the same network, those programs all work.
I'm connecting using Windows 7 Ultimate, using an Edimax 11n wireless usb card, with the following specs:
Machine name: ROB-PC Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.130318-1533) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: INTEL_ System Model: DQ77MK__ BIOS: BIOS Date: 05/04/12 19:37:40 Ver: 04.06.05 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz Memory: 8192MB RAM Available OS Memory: 8146MB RAM Page File: 5233MB used, 11056MB available Windows Dir: C:\Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 11 DX Setup Parameters: Not found User DPI Setting: Using System DPI System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled DxDiag Version: 6.01.7601.17514 32bit Unicode
It's also fairly difficult to do network diagnostics if you suspect it's a router problem, since my landlady provides the internet and the router config page is password-protected. I could bug her for it, but I'd like to have an idea of what the problem might be first. Thanks for any and all help

Display issues are preventing me from booting my PC into anything but safemode.

Before I start, let me just say one thing: I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I frequently download certain files off usenet. Occasionally I catch a bitcoin miner (once a month or so), which causes my display to flicker. I fix this by running Hitman Pro, MBAR, or ComboFix as a last scenario (all apps are up to date when ran).
Well, my computer started having issues yesterday. The symptoms were also display related, but they were different:
My screen would freeze for about 3 seconds and then go completely black. The monitor stayed black and didn't display the "no signal" message.
I would have to hard restart to get the computer back up. This happened about once an hour, for a total of three times. I figured it was another bitcoin miner so I booted into safe mode and ran Hitman, then MBAR. Neither of them showed any infections so I hit it with ComboFix and restarted the machine.
When the computer booted back up it jumped into a lower resolution (1024x768) and didn't give me an option to bump it higher. I opened Device Manager, which showed issues with my video card and an issue with "Marvell 91xx Config Device". It was late, I was frustrated, and I had work in the morning.
Well, I got back from work and my computer would not boot up. It showed all the "DOS" output, but the screen went blank where it should have showed the log in screen.
I booted into safe mode, and checked Device Manager again and saw that the same issues are still there. I updated the drivers for the video card off NVidia's website and got the drivers for the 91xx (what ever that is) off Gigabyte's support page. This cleared the problems in Device Manager, but my computer still won't show the log in screen.
Any tips?
Edit: I uninstalled the video card and re-installed the drivers from EVGA's website, still no luck. I tried booting up with a boot log enabled to see if I can catch what's happening, but there are over 60k lines and I have no idea how to sort through it.
Edit2: I uninstalled the video card and deleted the drivers. This allowed me to boot into Windows. Windows is installing the drivers automatically upon startup, then asks me to restart. It still has the problem where it shows a black screen unless I go into safe mode, so I have to say 'no' to restarting the computer and uninstall the video card in device manager as soon as the auto-install is complete.
Edit3: I tried installing two sets of older drivers, neither of them worked.
Edit4: I installed a new video card today (GTX970). I made sure all old NVidia drivers were uninstalled, popped in the 970, booted up, installed new drivers off EVGA's website, and restarted the machine. The computer went through it's normal "DOS" messages and the screen went blank with the Windows sound playing in the background. I was fucking livid, but right before I threw my mouse across the room, the screen showed up and everything is back to normal. It looks like my video card took a shit on me.

Casual Litecoin mining?

I'm interested in learning how mining works by stepping myself through the process for awhile. I'm not realistically looking to make any real profit, I just want to learn.
That said, I'm not interested in spending money on fancy miners and would prefer to just use a computer of my own and just leave the miner on in the background. My hope is that the comparative difficulty of altcoins to bitcoins will mean it's far less rough on my machine. Is there any truth to that?
I pulled a copy paste of my system info on the machine in question if that will help anyone. Could I casually mine litecoins or perhaps other altcoins without worrying about my machine?

GTX 560 TI Display Driver Stops Responding Followed By BSOD

Hi tech support, perhaps you could assist me with my late video card.
System Specs:
Motherboard: ASUS p8z77-v Processor: i7 2600k 3.4ghz 4 cores 8 logical processors Video Card (Currently removed): GTX 560 TI OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (6.1 build 7601) RAM: 8192MB
About a month ago I was using my PC, business as usual, when the display suddenly froze, as did the cursor, briefly before the screen flickered blank. The display returned to normal, however there was a message in the corner which said the the display driver had stopped responding, but had recovered. There was also a message about OAWrapper.exe not responding.
This only happened the first time; subsequent times when the display driver stopped responding, it failed to recover, causing the machine to restart after a BSOD that looked similar to this..
In once instance the display became corrupted, and I couldn't tell what I was clicking. Luckily, after trying to navigate blind, I opened something randomly, geforce experience, I got my display back.
I tried some of the recommended fixes on Google searches. One of the culprits was a bitcoin mining malware. After performing a scan I found two bitcoinmining malware programs, and removed them.
Anyway at this point I thought it would have fixed the issue, as it appeared to have for the people on the search results. Things were fine for a while. Then it happened again; monitor went blank, PC rebooted itself.
Eventually it got to the point where when I started the PC it would proceed with the windows starting screen, then as it was about to transition to the Windows log in screen the monitor would go i to power saving mode breifly, when display returned, I got the aformentioned BSOD; the only way I could get back on was starting in safe mode when it restarted.
I first tried unplugging the Video card, it would then start up on the Integrated graphics card, however the CPU fan goes ham and revs like mad. The only way to get it working normally was to completely remove the 560.
One thread I read advised getting the latest driver from Nvidia's site. So Since the driver wouldn't perform the install if the card wasn't detected, I downloaded the driver, reinserted the video card, started it in safe mode and installed the driver. It installed successfully, however, no solution came about it from it. The same thing happened when I tried to boot the machine normally.
Judging from other threads I read the display driver becoming unresponsive appears to be a driver issue. So I'm not sure if it's a result of a bad driver or if my video card is toast? I used to monitor it's temperature via GPUtweak and I never recall it exceeding 80 degrees C.
Thanks if anyone can assist I'm assuming I'm probably going to have to get myself a new GPU but I'd like to be able to fix this one if at all possible.

Total noob stuck trying to mine doge. [help]

Hello,
I've gotten up and running with GUIminer which mines bitcoins no problem, but I want to mine Doge, not Bit. I keep getting this error:
CURL return value = 52 "Communications error connecting to the RPC server"
I've triple checked that all my miner information is correct (user_name.miner_name not just miner_name).
I was using the suchcoins.com pool and figured maybe the server was down or something, so I switched to dogepool.net. Still the same error.
I tried running CUDAminer alone without GUIminer, but same results...
I'm stumped on what to do here...
Here's my specs:

Also I had a few other questions about mining: 1) I know ASIC's won't work on scrypt coins, but will ASIC's like AntMiner work for other SHA-256 coins? Or just bitcoins?
2) A lot of the tutorials I've seen have very short simple passwords for their workers. Some even just one letter. Why do workers need a password at all?
Thank you!
