Bitcoin Fullnode Install Guide for Dummies ;-)
Feel free to stop at Level 0 or Level 1, which is fine. More advanced configs are offered to those with more tech savvy. This guide, obviously assumes a Windows 10 install, but other OSes work fine, just find a different guide. BTW, the "For Dummies" is a callback to a set of "tech" books in the 90's intended to be as easy as possible. It is in jest and not intended to insult the reader. Finally, if you dislike the formatting, a well formatted copy can be found here
There is a fairly small subset of Bitcoin users that run a full node. I think the idea of running a full node has gotten a bad rap over the years since there is so much talk about running on a Raspberry Pi, or getting zippy SSDs. Although all of this can be fun, it is often not really required at all. Here are some ways to run a full node starting with the very simple. I'll get into more complex configs, but these are all optional.

Tech Skill Level: 0 (the basics)

  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
In many cases, thats it. If your running a new machine with a fairly good internet connection, 8 or 9 hours will be enough to complete the "Initial Block Download" (IBD). This may fill up your drive a bit, but again, on most new machines, 300 GB of space isn't that hard to come by.

Tech Skill Level: 1 (encrypted wallet)

One thing we left out in the level-0 exercise is encrypting your wallet. It's easy enough to do well, but a bit more difficult to do right. The main challenge is that humans generate really poor passwords. If you want a good password, the best way is to use something called "diceware". Basically, you just grab 4 or 5 dice and each throw of the dice represents a certain word on a special list. The throw {1,4,5,3,1} for example would be the word camping on the EFF-diceware-wordlist. So you repeat this a few times until you have a list of 8 or so words which becomes the passphrase you use to encrypt your wallet. Write it down, it is always hard to remember at first. So at level-1 your list becomes:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Choose Encrypt Wallet from the Settings menu
  5. Enter your 8 word (or so) passphrase generated using the Diceware method

Tech Skill Level: 2 (enable pruning if needed)

Though I said "300 GB of space isn't hard to come by", some times it actually is. If space is an issue, a simple way to fix it is to tell bitcoin to simple take less space. This is called "pruning" and can take that number from 300 GB down to below 5 GB. If you can't find 5 GB, then you'll have to read ahead to level-4 to add USB storage. But the good news is, enabling pruning is pretty easy, we just add another step to our working list:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  5. Choose Options from the Settings menu
  6. Choose Prune block storage to: and select the max size for the blocks to use
  7. Exit and restart the bitcoin application for the changes to take effect

Note, even setting this to 1 GB will still leave you with about a 4.5 GB install. The blocks take up a lot of space, but the chainstate and other folders eat up at least 3.5 GB and they can't be pruned. Also, be aware, to disable pruning requires you to perform the entire IBD again. While pruned some other functions my be disabled as well, so just know that pruning does limit some functionality.

Tech Skill Level: 3 (verify the installer)

Although this is arguably something that should be done at level-0, some find the intricacies of comparing hash (thumbprint) values to be tedious and beyond the scope of a beginner. You will find these types of hash compares suggested quite often as a way to prevent running tainted programs. Programs are often tainted by bad disk or network performance, but most often, taint is malicious code inserted by viruses or malware. This is a way to guard yourself against those types of attacks.
What I cover here is a very basic comparison on the certificate, but a more thorough verification advised by mosts uses a program called Gpg4Win, and is beyond the scope of this beginners guide. But regardless, most users should strive to do this minimum level of validation.
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer
  3. When prompted "Do you want to allow..." click Show more details
  4. In the details section select Show information about the publisher's certificate
  5. In the certificate window select the Details tab
  6. In the Details tab Subject should start with "CN = Bitcoin Core Code Signing Association"
  7. Ensure Thumbprint in Details reads ea27d3cefb3eb715ed214176a5d027e01ba1ee86
  8. If the checks pass, click OK to exit the certificate window and Yes to allow the installer to run.
  9. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  10. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  11. Do the optional pruning steps here if you wish

Note: The certificate used to sign the current Bitcoin installer is only valid from March 2020 to March 2021. After that point the thumbprint on the certificate will change. This is by design and intentional. If your reading this post after March 2021, then it is understood that the thumbprint has changed.

Tech Skill Level: 4 (use secondary storage)

We glossed over the "new machine with fairly good internet" part. Truth be known many people do not have fairly new machines, and find the IBD to take longer than the "over night" best wishes. For most people the slowdown is the disk access when calculating what is called chainstate. This requires fast random reads and writes to the disk. If you have an SSD disk, this will be no problem, but if you have a non-SSD "spinning" disk, random writes are always slow. Though an SSD will speed things up, they are pricey, so a nice middle ground may be a simple high-end USB key drive. You can get some with 10 to 15 MB/s random writes for $20 on Amazon. This is usually a order of magnitude faster than a "spinning" disk. And with pruning (see level-2), a small USB drive should be fine.
Once you decide on a drive, the tricky part will be to enable external storage. It requires editing a configuration file and adding a line. First, we want to create a directory on the key drive. You will need to determine the drive letter of your USB key drive. For the sake of this example, we will assume it is D:, but you must determine this yourself and correct the example. Once you know the drive letter, create a blank folder on the drive called Bitcoin. So for this example, creating Bitcoin on drive D: will create the path D:\Bitcoin. Once done, assuming that D: is your drive, here are the new steps including the edit of the configuration file:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the installer, verify it, then run it
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  5. Do the optional pruning steps here if you wish
  6. Launch "Notepad" by typing "Notepad.exe" in the windows search bar then click Open
  7. Type the line datadir=D:\Bitcoin (depending on your drive letter) in the blank file
  8. Choose Save from the File menu in notepad
  9. Type %APPDATA%\Bitcoin\bitcoin.conf (note the percent signs) in the File name box
  10. Select All Files from the Save as type dropdown
  11. Click the Save button and overwrite the file if prompted
  12. Exit and restart the bitcoin application for the changes to take effect

Now that you've reached this level of technical expertise, there are many new configuration options that you can begin to modify if you wish. Most configuration data is contained in the bitcoin.conf file and learning how to maintain it is a key step for a node operator.

Tech Skill Level: 5 (all other customizations)

Here's a short list of various things you can ADD to your bitcoin.conf file. You generally just add a new line for each configuration settings.
  • addresstype=bech32
  • changetype=bech32
The addresstype / changetype allows your wallet to use the native-segwit (bech32) format. This is the most efficient and inexpensive way to spend bitcoin, and is a recommended configuration. The default uses something called p2sh-segwit which is more compatible with older wallets, but more expensive to spend.
  • minrelaytxfee=0.00000011
Changing the minrelaytxfee setting allows you to help propagate lower fee transactions. It will require more memory but TXN memory is capped at 300 MB by default anyways, so if you have enough memory, it is a good setting to choose.
  • dbcache=2048
The dbcache setting controls how many MB of memory the program will use for the chainstate database. Since this is a key bottleneck in the IBD, setting this value high (2048 MB) will greatly speed up the IBD, assuming you have the memory to spare
  • blocksdir=C:\Bitcoin
  • datadir=D:\Bitcoin
In level-4 we discussed moving the datadir to a fast external storage, but the majority of the space used for bitcoin is the blocks directory (blocksdir). Although you should always use for fastest storage for datadir, you are free to use slow storage for blocksdir. So if you only want to consume a small amount of your SSD (assumed D:) then you can keep your blocks on your slow "spinning" drive.
  • upnp=1
One of the harder challenges you may face running a node, is to get incoming connections. If you are lucky, you may find that your firewall and network HW support the uPnP protocol. If they do, this setting will allow bitcoin to configure uPnP to allow incoming connections to your node. Other methods exist to make your node reachable, but they are well beyond the scope of this guide.

Gridcoin 5.0.0.0-Mandatory "Fern" Release

Finally! After over ten months of development and testing, "Fern" has arrived! This is a whopper. 240 pull requests merged. Essentially a complete rewrite that was started with the scraper (the "neural net" rewrite) in "Denise" has now been completed. Practically the ENTIRE Gridcoin specific codebase resting on top of the vanilla Bitcoin/Peercoin/Blackcoin vanilla PoS code has been rewritten. This removes the team requirement at last (see below), although there are many other important improvements besides that.
Fern was a monumental undertaking. We had to encode all of the old rules active for the v10 block protocol in new code and ensure that the new code was 100% compatible. This had to be done in such a way as to clear out all of the old spaghetti and ring-fence it with tightly controlled class implementations. We then wrote an entirely new, simplified ruleset for research rewards and reengineered contracts (which includes beacon management, polls, and voting) using properly classed code. The fundamentals of Gridcoin with this release are now on a very sound and maintainable footing, and the developers believe the codebase as updated here will serve as the fundamental basis for Gridcoin's future roadmap.
We have been testing this for MONTHS on testnet in various stages. The v10 (legacy) compatibility code has been running on testnet continuously as it was developed to ensure compatibility with existing nodes. During the last few months, we have done two private testnet forks and then the full public testnet testing for v11 code (the new protocol which is what Fern implements). The developers have also been running non-staking "sentinel" nodes on mainnet with this code to verify that the consensus rules are problem-free for the legacy compatibility code on the broader mainnet. We believe this amount of testing is going to result in a smooth rollout.
Given the amount of changes in Fern, I am presenting TWO changelogs below. One is high level, which summarizes the most significant changes in the protocol. The second changelog is the detailed one in the usual format, and gives you an inkling of the size of this release.

Protocol

Note that the protocol changes will not become active until we cross the hard-fork transition height to v11, which has been set at 2053000. Given current average block spacing, this should happen around October 4, about one month from now.
Note that to get all of the beacons in the network on the new protocol, we are requiring ALL beacons to be validated. A two week (14 day) grace period is provided by the code, starting at the time of the transition height, for people currently holding a beacon to validate the beacon and prevent it from expiring. That means that EVERY CRUNCHER must advertise and validate their beacon AFTER the v11 transition (around Oct 4th) and BEFORE October 18th (or more precisely, 14 days from the actual date of the v11 transition). If you do not advertise and validate your beacon by this time, your beacon will expire and you will stop earning research rewards until you advertise and validate a new beacon. This process has been made much easier by a brand new beacon "wizard" that helps manage beacon advertisements and renewals. Once a beacon has been validated and is a v11 protocol beacon, the normal 180 day expiration rules apply. Note, however, that the 180 day expiration on research rewards has been removed with the Fern update. This means that while your beacon might expire after 180 days, your earned research rewards will be retained and can be claimed by advertising a beacon with the same CPID and going through the validation process again. In other words, you do not lose any earned research rewards if you do not stake a block within 180 days and keep your beacon up-to-date.
The transition height is also when the team requirement will be relaxed for the network.

GUI

Besides the beacon wizard, there are a number of improvements to the GUI, including new UI transaction types (and icons) for staking the superblock, sidestake sends, beacon advertisement, voting, poll creation, and transactions with a message. The main screen has been revamped with a better summary section, and better status icons. Several changes under the hood have improved GUI performance. And finally, the diagnostics have been revamped.

Blockchain

The wallet sync speed has been DRASTICALLY improved. A decent machine with a good network connection should be able to sync the entire mainnet blockchain in less than 4 hours. A fast machine with a really fast network connection and a good SSD can do it in about 2.5 hours. One of our goals was to reduce or eliminate the reliance on snapshots for mainnet, and I think we have accomplished that goal with the new sync speed. We have also streamlined the in-memory structures for the blockchain which shaves some memory use.
There are so many goodies here it is hard to summarize them all.
I would like to thank all of the contributors to this release, but especially thank @cyrossignol, whose incredible contributions formed the backbone of this release. I would also like to pay special thanks to @barton2526, @caraka, and @Quezacoatl1, who tirelessly helped during the testing and polishing phase on testnet with testing and repeated builds for all architectures.

Bitcoin-qt datadir alternative storage location

I tried asking this in the bitcoincore sub yesterday, but it only has a handful of members and got no answers, so i now try here.
When bitcoin-qt is first started, it asks for the location of datadir. If it is set to a custom location, it remembers it on subsequent launches. Where is this location stored, as no bitcoin.conf is generated in the default location, and i have not seen any other documentation to specify datadir except command line option and bitcoin.conf file?

Pairing Bitcoin Mobile Wallet to Full Node on Tor

Will a mobile wallet be able to connect to a full node operating solely on the tor network (bitcoin.conf file has onlynet=onion).
I'm guessing that if the mobile is networking on clear net, then no. The question then is.... Is there a way of getting a light mobile client to connect to nodes only through the tor network.
For info, I'm not referencing any particular wallet here, could it be done via Electrum, bitcoin wallet, mycelium etc

There is a fairly small subset of Bitcoin users that run a full node. I think the idea of running a full node has gotten a bad rap over the years since there is so much talk about running on a Raspberry Pi, or getting zippy SSDs. Although all of this can be fun, it is often not really required at all. Here are some ways to run a full node starting with the very simple. I'll get into more complex configs, but these are all optional.

Tech Skill Level: 0 (the basics)

  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
In many cases, thats it. If your running a new machine with a fairly good internet connection, 8 or 9 hours will be enough to complete the "Initial Block Download" (IBD). This may fill up your drive a bit, but again, on most new machines, 300 GB of space isn't that hard to come by.

Tech Skill Level: 1 (encrypted wallet)

One thing we left out in the level-0 exercise is encrypting your wallet. It's easy enough to do well, but a bit more difficult to do right. The main challenge is that humans generate really poor passwords. If you want a good password, the best way is to use something called "diceware". Basically, you just grab 4 or 5 dice and each throw of the dice represents a certain word on a special list. The throw {1,4,5,3,1} for example would be the word camping on the EFF-diceware-wordlist. So you repeat this a few times until you have a list of 8 or so words which becomes the passphrase you use to encrypt your wallet. Write it down, it is always hard to remember at first. So at level-1 your list becomes:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Choose Encrypt Wallet from the Settings Menu
  5. Enter your 8 word (or so) passphrase generated using the Diceware method

Tech Skill Level: 2 (enable pruning if needed)

Though I said "300 GB of space isn't hard to come by", some times it actually is. If space is an issue, a simple way to fix it is to tell bitcoin to simple take less space. This is called "pruning" and can take that number from 300 GB down to below 5 GB. If you can't find 5 GB, then you'll have to read ahead to level-3 to add USB storage. But the good news is, enabling pruning is pretty easy, we just add another step to our working list:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  5. Choose Options from the Settings Menu
  6. Choose Prune block storage to: and select the max size for the blocks to use
  7. Exit and restart the bitcoin application for the changes to take effect

Note, even setting this to 1 GB will still leave you with about a 4.5 GB install. The blocks take up a lot of space, but the chainstate and other folders eat up at least 3.5 GB and they can't be pruned. Also, be aware, to disable pruning requires you to perform the entire IBD again. While pruned some other functions my be disabled as well, so just know that pruning does limit some functionality.

Tech Skill Level: 3 (verify the installer)

Although this is arguably something that should be done at level-0, some find the intricacies of comparing hash (thumbprint) values to be tedious and beyond the scope of a beginner. You will find these types of hash compares suggested quite often as a way to prevent running tainted programs. Programs are often tainted by bad disk or network performance, but most often, taint is malicious code inserted by viruses or malware. This is a way to guard yourself against those types of attacks. What I cover here is a very basic comparison on the certificate, but a more thorough comparison advised by mosts uses a program called Gpg4Win, and is beyond the scope of this beginners guide. But regardless, most users should strive to do this minimum level of validation.
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer
  3. When prompted "Do you want to allow..." click Show more details
  4. In the details section select Show information about the publisher's certificate
  5. In the certificate window select the Details tab
  6. In the Details tab Subject should start with "CN = Bitcoin Core Code Signing Association"
  7. Also ensure Thumbprint reads ea27d3cefb3eb715ed214176a5d027e01ba1ee86
  8. If the checks pass, click OK to exit the certificate window and Yes to allow the installer to run.
  9. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  10. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  11. Do the optional pruning steps here if you wish

Certification Validation Windows
Note: The certificate used to sign the current Bitcoin installer is only valid from March 2020 to March 2021. After that point the thumbprint on the certificate will change. This is by design and intentional. If your reading this post after March 2021, then it is understood that the thumbprint has changed.

Tech Skill Level: 4 (use secondary storage)

We glossed over the "new machine with fairly good internet" part. Truth me known many people do not have fairly new machines, and find the IBD to take longer than the "over night" best wishes. For most people the slowdown is the disk access when calculating what is called chainstate. This requires fast random reads and writes to the disk. If you have an SSD disk, this will be no problem, but if you have a non-SSD "spinning" disk, random writes are always slow. Though an SSD will speed things up, they are pricey, so a nice middle ground may be a simple high-end USB key drive. You can get some with 10 to 15 MB/s random writes which is usually a order of magnitude faster than a "spinning" disk. And with pruning (see level-2), a small USB drive should be fine.
Once you decide on a drive, the tricky part will be to enable external storage. It requires editing a configuration file and adding a few lines. The configuration file needs to be in both the default directory, and USB key drive, but before we do that, we want to create a directory on the key drive. You will need to determine the drive letter of your USB key drive. For the sake of this example, we will assume it is D:, but you must determine this yourself and correct the example. Once you know the drive letter, create a blank folder on the drive called Bitcoin. So for this example, creating Bitcoin on drive D: will create the path D:\Bitcoin. Once done, assuming that D: is your drive, here are the steps to edit the two configuration files:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the installer, verify it, then run it
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  5. Do the optional pruning steps here if you wish
  6. Launch "Notepad" by typing "Notepad.exe" in the windows search bar then click Open
  7. Type the line datadir=D:\Bitcoin (depending on your drive letter) in the blank file
  8. Choose Save from the File menu in notepad
  9. Type %APPDATA%\Bitcoin\bitcoin.conf (note the percent signs) in the File name box
  10. Select All Files from the Save as type dropdown
  11. Click the Save button and overwrite the file if prompted
  12. Exit and restart the bitcoin application for the changes to take effect

Now that you've reached this level of technical expertise, there are many new configuration options that you can begin to modify if you wish. Most configuration data is contained in the bitcoin.conf file and learning how to maintain it is a key step for a node operator.

Tech Skill Level: 5 (all other customizations)

Here's a short list of various things you can ADD to your bitcoin.conf file. You generally just add a new line for each configuration settings.
  • addresstype=bech32
  • changetype=bech32
The addresstype / changetype allows your wallet to use the native-segwit (bech32) format. This is the most efficient and inexpensive way to spend bitcoin, and is a recommended configuration. The default uses something called p2sh-segwit which is more compatible with older wallets, but more expensive to spend.
  • minrelaytxfee=0.00000011
Changing the minrelaytxfee setting allows you to help propagate lower fee transactions. It will require more memory but TXN memory is capped at 300 MB by default anyways, so if you have enough memory, it is a good setting to choose.
  • dbcache=2048
The dbcache setting controls how many MB of memory the program will use for the chainstate database. Since this is a key bottleneck in the IBD, setting this value high (2048 MB) will greatly speed up the IBD, assuming you have the memory to spare
  • blocksdir=C:\Bitcoin
  • datadir=D:\Bitcoin
In level-4 we discussed moving the datadir to a fast external storage, but the majority of the space used for bitcoin is the blocks directory (blocksdir). Although you should always use for fastest storage for datadir, you are free to use slow storage for blocksdir. So if you only want to consume a small amount of your SSD (assumed D:) then you can keep your blocks on your slow "spinning" drive.
  • upnp=1
One of the harder challenges you may face running a node, is to get incoming connections. If you are lucky, you may find that your firewall and network HW support the uPnP protocol. If they do, this setting will allow bitcoin to configure uPnP to allow incoming connections to your node.

Instaling BTC Core - Prune settings help

I am installing BTC Core for the first time on my mac. I am trying to instal the pruned verison.
What I've done is begun the complete installation by default because without there is no directory create on my system. When the installation begun and I had my directory then I accessed it the right way to create the bitcoin.conf file: - Library/Application Support/Bitcoin
Then to the conf file included prune=550 and then restarted the the installation.
Now the estimated time to sync is around the same as when I started without the prune.
Is this the right way to proceed? Is there any way to confirm that now a pruned version is being created?

Thanks for your help and also your understanding that I am a beginner with beginner questions.

Act 22 new annual compliance raised from $300 to $5000!

This was warned about when they raised the annual compliance fee from $50 to $300 in 2015, but Society leaders, as it now turns out, made a grave mistake in dismissing the concerns from the wiser posters. Objectors at the time correctly pointed out that if the $300 fee wasn't stopped, there would be nothing to stop the Puerto Rican government from ratcheting up the annual compliance fee further in the future. This is an indirect, underhanded, backdoor tax on decree holders that shows the Puerto Rican government cannot be trusted. This implies there are 2380 Act 22 Decree Holders. $11,900,000/$5000=2380.
Just as the Puerto Rico government tried to circumvent getting the required approval for contracts over $10,000,000, with the Covid-19 testing kits, by instead claiming they were "purchase orders" instead of "contracts," Puerto Rico government is now sticking Act 22 Individual Investors with another $5000 tax, by raising the annual compliance "fee" from $300 to $5000, an increase of over 1500%!!! These ever higher ratcheting fees have made these programs only for the "super rich." There is no rational basis for the fee to increase by $4700 in one year.
So now its $5000 to apply for Act 22, $5000 to accept Act 22, then $15,000 more annually from the $10,000 annual charitable donation and $5000 more for annual filing? That's $25,000 total in the first year, and $15,000 or more every year, something that only the "super rich" can afford. I thought The Society was going to use its unified voice to protect Act 22 people, not only represent the "super rich." How are the benefits being preserved, when instead the decree holders that are not "super rich" are being squeezed to death with soaring taxes, hidden as soaring annual compliance filing fees?
What is to stop Puerto Rico politicians from raising the annual compliance filing fee to $50,000? As the fee is not commensurate with the costs to process the annual reports, it shows this is nothing but an underhanded illegal tax, disguised as a fee, mislabeled as a fee. Why should the annual filing compliance fee go up 100x in 5 years? That's egregiously unreasonable. Similar government arrogance is what killed the tax incentive program in the US Virgin Islands.

Lawsuit? Who can create a Puerto Rico charitable foundation with its mission to keep the Puerto Rican government honest? For those who are required to do the $5000+$5000 forced annual donations, a new charitable foundation should be established to promote honest government in Puerto Rico, to accept these donations.

I will be telling all my friends to not move to Puerto Rico because the government can't be trusted to honor the decrees without sneaking in underhanded, indirect taxes, that are mischaracterized as annual filing fees.

First article is somewhat inaccurate/misleading, since it applies to ALL Act 22 decree holders, not just those involved in cryptocurrency. It will harm everyone involved in the program, and deter many others from coming. Only the "super rich" will keep coming to Puerto Rico or stay in Puerto Rico.

Crypto investors and entrepreneurs looking to take advantage of Puerto Rico’s favorable tax incentives will now find it more costly to do so.
Late last week, Governor Wanda Vazquez signed Law 40-2020 into effect, which made a key change to the rules that govern tax incentives for new residents. Previously, investors who moved to the island and applied for these incentives were required to pay a yearly fee of $300 for the privilege. The new law increases that yearly fee to $5,000.
The Puerto Rican government expects to generate $11.9 million in fees with this rate increase in an update to what was formerly known as law 22-2012. The new legislation also provides a tax contribution reduction of 3% for those who earn $100,000 or less.
"The increment in maintenance costs for the decrees raises the bar for those who take part and for potential investors looking to relocate to the island for the tax benefits,” Giovanni Méndez, managing partner at Puerto Rican tax consulting firm Geo Tax, told Decrypt.
“The higher fee assumes that all of the participants are millionaires who hold fortunes with immediate liquidity. Those of us in the community know that this is not the case for a large part of investors and entrepreneurs that have relocated to the island," he said. Indeed, the fees and other requirements apply to anyone who has lived in Puerto Rico for at least six months and applies for tax relief for his or her business.

According to Geo Tax, the total cost of moving to the island to save on taxes includes a $750 filing fee, $5,000 special fund fee once approved, $10,000 yearly donation (split in two), plus the new $5,000 yearly fee.
"Regarding investors in the cryptocurrency market, the increase in costs affects whether some will remain on the island due to the volatility of the market and changes in value,” said Méndez. “The new Incentives Code brought sections that incorporate benefits to the crypto and blockchain markets which is something positive, but it clearly contrasts with this last legislation,” he said.
It’s these tax incentives that have brought entrepreneurs from across various industries, including cryptocurrency, to the US commonwealth. Co-founder of EOS Alliance Block.one Brock Pierce and gold proponent (and Bitcoin skeptic) Peter Shiff, for example, make Puerto Rico their home for at least half the year.
Just last month, during the CoinAgenda Caribbean conference in San Juan, Pierce reiterated his optimism that Puerto Rico can still become the “blockchain island”—a beacon for the industry—that was once promised.

Puerto Rico was once seen as a perfect location for digital currency startups. It had considerable tax incentives in place that benefited investors and entrepreneurs, which led to an increase in the development of business solutions in the U.S.-controlled territory. However, either by design or due to economic shortcomings caused by the coronavirus and other disasters, Puerto Rico needs to find new sources of revenue. As a result, a new law has been approved that will change the structure of the digital currency tax incentive programs in place.
Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez approved a new law last week, Law 40-2020, that alters the way tax incentives are provided to new residents. Spanish media outlet El Nuevo Día (The New Day) points out that the previous annual fee of $300 for those who moved to the island and applied for the incentive has been substantially increased. It has now jumped up to $5,000, and is expected to generate an additional $11.9 million for the government. In addition, there is also a new tax contribution reduction equal to 3% for anyone who earns $100,000 or less.
In correspondence with Decrypt, Puerto Rican tax consultant Giovanni Méndez, representing tax consulting firm Geo Tax, says, “The increment in maintenance costs for the decrees raises the bar for those who take part and for potential investors looking to relocate to the island for the tax benefits. There is a $750 filing fee, a $5,000 “special fund fee” if the filing application is approved, a $10,000 obligatory annual contribution (with the possibility of having the fee made in two payments) and the new $5,000 fee.

Connecting bitcoin-qt to bitcoind on local network

Hello,
I have a bitcoin node running on a headless box (bitcoind) and I would like to connect to it using bitcoin-qt on my desktop. I'm getting a little confused with the process.... does bitcoin-qt need to connect to bitcoind using RPC? Do I store my wallet file on the bitcoind box, or bitcoin-qt box?
The bitcoin node is already setup to work with an electrum server, so I already have rpcbind=0.0.0.0, rpcallowip=$ELECTRUX_IP, and rpcuserpcpassword set. I tried adding my desktop IP to rpcallowip, and setting the appropriate username/password in bitcoin-qt's bitcoin.conf, but no luck. I can see in debug.log for bitcoin-qt that the connection is rejected.

The node runs over TOR and I have onlynet=onion set in bitcoind's bitcoin.conf, but that doesn't seem to stop electrumx connecting via RPC over clearnet, so this shouldn't be an issue right?

Am I missing something here? Help would be much appreciated!

Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server aims to make using Electrum Groestlcoin wallet more secure and more private. It makes it easy to connect your Electrum-GRS wallet to your own full node.
It is an implementation of the Electrum-grs server protocol which fulfils the specific need of using the Electrum-grs wallet backed by a full node, but without the heavyweight server backend, for a single user. It allows the user to benefit from all Groestlcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocks only and disabled txindex. Q: Are all the projects listed in the Ren Alliance, the final set of members?
A: No, please do keep in mind this just our first round of partners, some larger orgs require a bit more DD (i.e our audit). We’ll release the final set of members when Mainnet goes live.

Q: How do projects join the Ren Alliance?
A: It’s simple, just fill out this application. It takes about five minutes, and all you need is your company’s logo files and your preferred area(s) of involvement. Joining the Alliance requires no binding commitments, only a desire to help bring cross-chain assets to DeFi.

Q: For example let's say there is a crypto index which contains 1 BTC and 1 ZEC. I have 1 BTC and 1 ZEC and I would like to “mint” this index token with RenVM. Will something like this possible in the future?
A: This is already possible today. RenVM allows you to mint renBTC and renZEC (and renBCH) on Ethereum. This result is an ERC20 like any other with the addition that when you burn it, you get real BTC and ZEC back.
Another nice feature is that you can directly call smart contracts when minting. This is not possible in any other system, and results in a very clean and simple user experience. People can make a BTC transaction followed by a ZEC transaction and with no other blockchain actions end up with their BTC and ZEC in your example system (your example system would have functions for accepting BTC and ZEC and when receiving both, it would output some kind of index token; exactly how it functions is up to how you want to implement your contract!)

Q: What blockchains does RenVM support?
A: RenVM can support any ECDSA based blockchain but we'll be starting with BTC, ZEC, and BCH. More info here: https://github.com/renproject/ren/wiki/Supported-Blockchains

Q: Another concern is chain rollback. In the case of MakerDAO getting hacked (unlikely, but not impossible), the Ethereum network could rollback just like with the DAO. (Unlikely, but not impossible). But what if the attacker already has deposited the hacked funds into RenVM and gotten a private coin?
A: A roll-back would still revert that state. Privacy on-chain != no state tracking something (just in a way that doesn’t reveal information). So reverts don’t really matter in that sense. They do matter in a broader sense: you have renBTC and you burn it for BTC, then Ethereum rolls back to when you had renBTC still. This is something the Ethereum community has to consider very carefully these days if they were to ever do such a revert. This is an ultimately unavoidable truth RE interoperability; you are compounding risks of the chains you are using. In general, this is why it’s always safer to keep your BTC on Bitcoin unless there is a specific reason you need it on Ethereum at any given point in time.

Q: If BTC can be transferred with zero confirmation how many transactions RenVM can handle?
A: RenVMs throughput isn’t affected by conf-less transactions. This is a service provided by L2 technology (like the 0Conf team, who are building exactly this!). This doesn’t affect RenVM directly, but it does have the pleasant impact that users won’t notice network congestion if it happens.

Q: Can you explain the over-collateralization security dynamic between tBTC and RenVM? Does this play into Maker using RenVM vs. tBTC to collaetize their CDP’s
A1: It’s not the over collateralization that’s the problem. It’s that to get $X BTC they need 1.5x $X ETH locked up in their protocol. What about other places that give better ETH returns? What about the fact that ETH doesn’t go up in price just because tBTC is used?
With REN, we are actually over collateralized (so they’re wrong that they are more secure in this regard). The big difference: BTC flowing through REN increases the value of the REN collateral, increasing the security, increasing the capacity of BTC that can flow through the system. It’s a positive feedback loop for capacity and security that simply doesn’t exist if you don’t use an isolated token.
A2: Maker wants to use BTC to collateralise Dai, because it diversifies risk and expands the possible Dai supply (by expanding possible collateral). If you use tBTC, then tBTC is collateralised by ETH so you actually become less efficient at minting Dai, and you don’t diversify risk because tBTC gets liquidated by ETH price movements.
You don’t want your network secured by collateral that has speculative value that is not correlated with the usage of the network. That makes things unstable.
If RenVM is being used, the value of REN increases, and the more RenVM can be used (and Darknodes get the positive upside of their bond increasing in value). This means by pumping lots of BTC into RenVM, you gain more capacity to pump more BTC into RenVM. This creates a positive feedback loop for the returns earned by Darknodes, the value of their bond, and overall/capacity security of the network.
Compare to tBTC: you are waiting for ETH to go up in value. It’s value, which does not correlate with the amount of BTC in the system, limits the AUM that the system can hold. You’re hoping it will go up independently of the usage of your network and if it doesn’t you’re out of luck. Network growth does not drive the ability for the network to grow. Your are also competing with the returns on ETH that other ecosystems allow you to get (why bond ETH in tBTC if you can get better returns on that ETH in other places; lending it or staking it in Eth2.0). (Btw: we’re doing research to get our collateralisation of REN to 150%. It’s already possible, and could be done today, but we are just seeing if we can make it safelivelier than the current best-in-class algorithms.)

Q: How do we define the value of L and R if we don't use oracle price feed?
A: It will be decided by the Darknodes. The best mechanism of doing this is still being decided upon. However, it won’t simply be taken from the current market price / third-party oracles as those are vulnerable to manipulation. Ultimately, the only valuation that matters is the Darknodes (because they’re the ones being potentially bribed).

Q: In my opinion, RenVM (and tBTC adoption bottleneck: 300% collateral ratio» this ratio is important for security and decentralization» to sustain this ratio we need significant fees to be imposed on Renbtc holders» example: if there was 100m$ Renbtc total supply then we need 300m$ ren locked in darknodes» if 3-5% fees paid for those 300m$ then we need to extract 9-15 million fees from the 100m renbtc» that equal 9-15% annual fees» of course it will be lower with the minting and burning fees but I don't think it will cover half of the total needed fees» the result with the current design there are still too much economic friction IMO.
A: The key thing to keep in mind is velocity. Not just TVL. Let’s take Kyber as an example: they have $4.9M AUM. But, they did $3.7M in trades in the last 24 hours. Over the year, that’s 275x their AUM.
So, if RenVM is holding $100M AUM, and achieves a volume multiplier of 200x then it gets $1M p/a in holding fees but $40M in minting/burning fees. This is all assuming the minimum fee as well (it rises as TVL approaches the limit). So RenVM would need a $300M market cap on $41M in revenue. That’s 13% p/a, assuming we don’t make the move to only 150% collateral. If we do move to that, then it’s almost 33% p/a.
RenVM is by far and away the best UX for instantly swapping BTC on DEXs (with no gas, and no confirmations). All of the interfaces we’re building and the tools we’re providing give people that native experience. This is precisely because high TVL is not what yields good returns and increases cap for the protocol.
Even systems like MakerDAO/Compound have people moving BTC in/out. Their AUM is by no means static. People are constantly opening/closing/liquidating positions and all of this is would create velocity through RenVM.

Q: How was ETHDenver?
A: ETHDenver was great, and very productive, confirmed a lot of our thoughts on what needs to be done but also gave us a good amount of exposure, so overall it was a positive for the team and RenVM.

.bitcoin folder unwritable

Running a Bitcoin core server on RPI4 and all of the sudden I can't change the Bitcoin.conf file or run Bitcoin because I cannot write to .bitcoin directory, I tried chmod +w and still no luck

Is it normal for a new Full Node server to repeatedly show Potential Sale Tip detected messages? What does this even mean. I surprisingly can't find anything with a solution on the internet. Please look at my log dump and give me an idea what to do. Im trying to run a full node in service to the net
